I had a customer come in last week with a 2012 Honda CR-V. 205,000 km on it. He asked me straight up — "Greg, is it time to let this thing go?"
I looked at the service history. Regular oil changes. Timing belt done at 160k. Brakes last year. I told him the truth.
"This car's got another 100,000 km in it easy. Why would you spend $50,000 on something new?"
He laughed. But I wasn't joking.
Here's what's happening out there
People are keeping their cars way longer than they used to. The average car on the road in Canada right now is over 12 years old. That's not because people are lazy about buying new — it's because they're doing the math.
A new car costs over $66,000 on average. Even a decent used one is $30,000+. Then you've got the interest on top of that. We're talking $600, $700, $800 a month for years.
Or you can put a few thousand into the car you already own and drive it for another three years. Doesn't take a genius to figure out which one makes more sense.
The stuff that sneaks up on you
When a car gets past 100,000 km, things don't usually break all at once. They wear out quietly.
Your suspension gets a little soft. You don't notice because it happened gradually. Then one day you realize your tires are chewed up on one side and the car feels floaty on the highway.
Your coolant gets old. The water pump gets tired. Nothing happens — until one hot day in August when you're stuck on the side of Harvey Avenue with steam pouring out of the hood.
Your brake fluid absorbs moisture year after year. The lines start corroding from the inside. You won't know until the pedal feels spongy — or worse.
This is the stuff we catch. This is why regular visits to a good shop matter way more when your car has some km on it.
What I tell my customers
Don't wait for the breakdown. Come in, let us look at the whole car, and we'll tell you what needs attention now and what can wait. No pressure. No scare tactics. Just honest information so you can plan.
We see cars in here every week with 200,000, 250,000, 300,000 km that are running great. The owners who take care of them spend less in the long run than the ones who ignore things until something fails.
Your car took care of you. Take care of it.
And when you do need work done, everything we do at JFC is backed by the NAPA Autopro warranty — 36 months, 60,000 km, honoured coast to coast. So you're covered whether you're driving around Kelowna or road-tripping to the Maritimes.
If you've got a car with some km on it and you're wondering if it's worth keeping — come talk to us. The answer might surprise you.
